Recently, we've made a day trip to Strasbourg to check out the world-famous Christmas market. Have you heard about it? Probably you did! In this blog post we'd like to give you the answer if it is worth to visit THIS Christmas market in Europe and show you, of course, some photos from our trip. Enjoy!
Strasbourg Christmas Market - To Go or Not to Go?
In order to make the decision easier for you, we've listed some arguments that speak for the Christmas market and some that simply don't :) Let's have a look:
- it's the oldest Christmas market in Europe (first held in 1570)
- there are more than 4 different Christmas markets in the city
- the typical Strasbourg houses are an eye-catcher -> a beautiful city!
- the stalls offer great Christmas shopping
- sipping mulled wine (vin chaud) is lots of fun
- tasting delicious Christmas food -> bretzels, ginger bread, spiced biscuits etc.
- it's a great atmosphere
Why Not to Go?
- too touristy
- garishly decorated buildings
- potential safety issues
Is It Worth It?
If you swallow the fact that there will be lots of tourists and many policemen walking around due to safety precautions then Strasbourg is a trip worth it! It's also not a very expensive city such as Zurich or Oslo. In our opinion, the city is also quite a beauty with its river, French-styled houses, cathedrals, small cafes, restaurants and shops! But hey, if Christmas markets are not your thing, why not visiting it in summer?
When to Go?
This year the Strasbourg Christmas market runs from 24 November to 24 December.
How to Access it?
You can fly to Paris and then drive 4 hours to Strasbourg. There is also a high-speed train from Paris (TGV) which brings you in 2 h and 20 min to the city. Another option is to fly to Zurich or Basel and then to take the Flixbus to Strasbourg (exactly what we did).
