Kranj is not just a wonderful city, it's also a great base for day trips. Other than the classics, like Bled, Bohinj and Ljubljana, here are some currently less known, but still awesome places that are worthy of a day trip. Most of the places described below can also be a really nice bike trip if you're up for that and if you want to do, what the locals from Kranj do.
Wonderful Day Trips from Kranj, Slovenia
Saint Jacobs Church (Sveti Jakob)
If you're like us, then you like hiking, but don't like waking up very early. Well no worries, you can reach the starting point for the hike up to Saint Jacobs church in just about 20 min by car. The hike should take you no more than 1h 30min (potentially much faster, if you're fit) and there is a lovely mountain hut at the top, which serves (among other things) really good homemade herbal tea. Plus, there are the views and the feeling that you've done something for both your mind and body, while still sleeping in. And in our opinion, that's a huge win :)
Lake Črnava, Preddvor
Just ca. 10 km or a 15 min car drive from the city centre lies a village called Preddvor, where you can enjoy a nice cup of coffee by the lake Crnava and take a nice walk in nature with the view of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps.
Just next to the Crnava lake in Preddvor lies a small hill called Mozjanca. You can reach the top by car, but if you're really awesome, you'll conquer the ca. 2km hill by bike. Once on the top, there are many options to take walks in the forest and enjoy the view. As a fun personal fact, the ascent to Mozjanca still serves as a bike measuring unit since it's about 2km long and has 200 height meters, which makes it perfect to compare with other hills.
Velika Planina is a mountain plateau in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps northeast of the city Kamnik. It's an awesome place to visit in all seasons. You can also sleep in an authentic chalet. And while you're in the region, the small city of Kamnik is
definitely worth visiting.
Sveti Jost is a hill above Kranj, which offers great views of the surrounding mountains, the city of Kranj, church and a nice little restaurant. You can reach the 847m above sea level top by car, but do yourself a favour and walk up - you and your future you won't regret it. If you're a cyclist and you like a challenge, go for it - but it does get quite steep at the end :)
Right next to Jost, you can find it's little sister - Smarjetna Gora (646m above sea level). Similar to Jost, you can reach the top by car, but stretch your legs and go on foot if you can. There's a cool hotel and restaurant at the top.
Apparently, the church of St. Primus and Felicianus is one of the most photographed locations in Slovenia - we bet you didn't know that. You can reach it by car in about 30 min (ca. 18 km), but it's also a really nice bike route if you're up for that.
Jezersko is an awesome valley surrounded by Kamnik-Savinja Alps. It's a great place for a walk in the nature, longer and more demanding hike into the Alps or just enjoying something to eat or a cup of coffee at the lake. It will take you about 40 min to reach it by car, but it's also a brilliant bike ride to get to the top (you do want to earn your coffee, don't you?).
This is not actually a day trip, but it's an awesome coffee place just outside of Kranj (12 min by car, but it's close enough to go by bike, even if you're not a cyclist). They offer a cosy place right next to lake Trboje. They are mostly known for homemade cakes.
About 12km or a 20 min car ride from the city centre of Kranj, you'll find Skofja Loka, a wonderful little medieval town. It offers a castle with a museum, some nice cafes, a marketplace and cute looking narrow streets.
