Lüner Lake, Austria
The Lüner Lake is a true gem in the beautiful Austrian Alps. It is located just at the border with Switzerland and Liechtenstein. With its stunning scenery it makes an unforgettable day-trip for individuals or families. It is possible to visit the lake by taking the cable car (ca. 8 EUR one way) from Schattenlagand or if you like hiking there is an hour hike to the top. Once there, consider walking around the lake to get the best out of it. Check out our blog post about the hike to this lake.
König Lake, Germany
This is another astonishing lake in Europe! It is called the König Lake and it is located in the region of Berchtesgaden, 2 h and 10 min drive from München and only 40 min from Salzburg. First, we recommend to visit the cute village along the lake called Schönau am Königsee, then taking a boat to the end (the South) of this lake and walk to the small lake nearby called Obersee! For spectacular views over the König Lake, take also the cable car to the Jenner Mountain and if there is need for a stretch, hike all the way down. A day well spend!
Gelmer Lake, Switzerland
To the section of the most beautiful lakes we've seen so far definitely belongs the Gelmer Lake in the country we now live in - Switzerland! The colour of this alpine lake is something unique and the mountains that surround it are just spectacular. We'd also say it's a perfect place for a meditation break. You can access this lake by taking a cable car or hiking to the top - for all the details, please visit our blog post.
Seven Lakes, Bulgaria
The Seven (Rila) Lakes are a dream of every hiker! It can be done as a day-trip from Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria. You can either book an organised tour from the city or do it on your own. The lake Tear is the highest one at 2535 metres above the sea level. If you want to see the first 5 lakes, it will take you about 3 hours, in case you are up to visit all 7, it's about 5 hours in total.
Lagoa Fogo, The Azores, Portugal
This is one of the best out of the most beautiful lakes we've ever witnessed! It's home are the lovely remote Azores islands in the Atlantic ocean. It's beauty can be described in words, make yourself a picture by booking a flight to these volcanic islands. The lake is placed in the island called Sao Miguel - so make sure to book a flight to the city Ponta Delgada. There are many hiking trails leading to this lake - count in a whole day for this natural wonder! Stay tuned for the upcoming blog post about the Azores!
Lake Bled, Slovenia
Not to be missed the lake we probably know the best as it is only 20 minutes away from the house we used to live in when in Slovenia. It is called Lake Bled and is known for its romantic touch due to its church on a small island in the middle of this turquoise lake. In the summer, it is a popular swimming, kayaking and hiking destination. For the best panoramic views, ascend to Osojnica - a place your camera will love you for.
Lake Braies, Italy
The Lake Braies in Italy is one of the alpine lakes in the majestic Dolomites! This green-coloured lake surrounded by mountains attracts many visitors every year. Rent a boat and paddle around the lake. You can also put your hiking shoes on and hike to Croda del Becco to soak up the views over the lake from above!
Lake Presa de Las Ninas, Gran Canaria, Spain
This lake called Presa de las Ninas (actually it is a dam), located on one of the Canary Islands - Gran Canaria, has took our breaths away! Who has ever seen growing cactuses along a lake? It is really special due to its vegetation and its hilly environment. Don't miss out this lake when vacationing on this lovely island! What else did we do on Gran Canaria? Have a look!
Lake Annecy, France
Lake Annecy is an exhilarating summer destination for many tourists as also for the locals themselves. A perfect day at this place would look like this: Explore the medieval city of Annecy which is one of our favourite small cities in Europe! Then plunge into this beautiful water and get some sun rays on your skin! If you get hungry, try a typical French crepe! Yummy! Afterwards drive to the scenic castle above the Annecy lake - le Chateau de Menthon St Bernard. Enjoy!
Plitvice Lakes, Croatia
The Plitvice Lakes should be on this list too. This is a well-known tourist destination but it has a high visitors' rate for a reason! The beautifully coloured 16 lakes with its waterfalls are an awe-inspiring attraction, worth the money for the entrance (23 EUR)! It is an UNESCO heritage site, which should be (in our opinion) visited outside the peak season. We'd say October is a great month to visit it!
