Let us tell you where to find Switzerland's vacations spots! No one likes to rush from one place to another, right? Sometimes all you need is a place to settle down while on vacation. If you want a spot in the mountains or close to crystal-clear lakes consider going to one of the following areas in Switzerland! Let's have a look!
Switzerland - Vacation Spots
Make the most out of your Switzerland vacation with our pick of the most beautiful vacation spots for adventure activities and best views.
Zermatt as the center of Valais, is car-free village and probably the number one of Switzerland's vacation spots. Why? With its mountainous surroundings it is the dream of every nature-lover and it has its jewel - the legendary Matterhorn. If you want to breath some mountain air and fancy a mirror-effect of this mountain in a alpine lake, we have a great tip for you! Do the Zermatt lakes trail! It will be a hike of 2 h and 35 min and goes to the top of the Riffelalp. Once you stop at Lake Stelli you may want to take a photo of the awesome mirror-effect!
But even if you're not planning to do any of the sport activities, don't worry, there is so much more. One of the best things you can do for your unforgettable Switzerland vacation is to rent a chalet in the mountains of Zermatt and Verbier to be in the middle of the mountain paradise!
The Vaud region is a wonderful vacation spot in Switzerland. Take time to walk down the streets of its most vivid cities: Geneva, Montreux, Vevey and the regions' capital city Lausanne.
Geneva is economically an important city in Switzerland. Its an international hub for banking. While it is not the most relaxed place out there (at least not for us) it still makes a great city day-trip while vacationing in the Vaud region.
Lausanne is a old student city known for its narrow cobbled streets, pretty squares, historic buildings and its nice lakefront. Between the French-speaking city and Montreux there is a lush vineyard region, welcoming visitors every year to do a hike between the vineyards and to taste locals' wine. This hike should be on everyone's list when vacationing in this area.
Montreux is ideally situated on Lake Geneva. This city is known for its jazz festival in July, so all jazz-lovers, maybe the Vaud region is the best you can pick for your Switzerland vacation. Oh, and let's not forget the gorgeous Chillon castle, which is a photographer's dream.
Vevey is a pretty town in the Vaud region. Without doubt, it's our favourite in this area due to its chilly lakefront, its narrow streets and beautiful houses. In the hot summer nights lots of people come to the lake to enjoy a romantic sunset over the lake.
Interlaken is a town which lies between the crystal clear lakes Brienzersee and Thunersee. Renting a bike will give you the opportunity to go for a glorious bike trip around the Brienzsee (Brienz lake). While there don't forget to visit Brienz - a beautiful medieval village, perfect for a bike break.
While the Interlaken region is obviously a tourist hot spot, it's this famous for a reason! Have you ever heard of the majestic mountain called Jungfraujoch? You can take the cable car to the top! Imagine the awesome alpine scenery at 3,466 metres.
Some of our favourite in this region include the Niederhorn, Harder Kulm and Brienzer-Rothorn mountain. All offer top panoramic views over the Thuner and Brienzersee.
Besides that, in Grindelwald, there are many hiking trails to enjoy, such as the route to the lovely Bachalpsee. In doesn't end there. Go also for some cool adventures - for example the First Flyer Zipline.
An 1-hour drive from Zurich, the Lucerne region is a popular vacation hub for tourists and the Swiss. It's the region with the highest share of turquoise mountain lakes such as the Bannalpsee, Gelmer Lake, Bachalpsee, Melchsee etc. of which we've totally fallen in love with!
For the best panoramic views choose Pilatus or/and Rigi. You just have to see this spectacular viewpoints! Believe us, both are worth the money for the cable car! The alternative would be to hike to the top but this would need quite a stretch! :)
The Lucerne region is perfect for adventure-seekers. Imagine kayaking on the beautiful Lake Lucerne, hiking the Grosser Mythen for its fantastic views and paragliding from Rigi.
In the winter, we recommend to go for a snowshoeing adventure to the Fronalpstock (Stoos) due to the rewarding views over the Lake Lucerne when reaching the top! We wrote about it here.
Aside from the famous hiking area around Zermatt, there is another Swiss region, suitable for a perfect Switzerland vacation in the mountains! It goes by the name Graubünden (Eng. also Grisons).
Among the many hiking trails there is an epic hike route along the Schwellisee to Älplisee and the Hörnlihütte, Urdensee - find a detailed description in this blog post.
In the winter, there is a bunch of things to do, such as skiing and cross-country skiing in St. Moritz, Klosers or Davos. Go for an exhilarating day in the Swiss Alps, covered in snow! If you plan to stay overnight, make your Switzerland vacation unforgettable by booking a luxury villa in the alpine world.
If you fancy a beautiful train ride, don't miss out the world-wide known journey with Bernina express. Start the ride in Chur and go all the way to Lugano in the Ticino region - another vacation spot which follows.
The most exciting vacation spots in this area are Lugano, Locarno, Ascona and Bellinzona. Read more about the region here.
In Lugano, there are spectacular viewpoints to enjoy from the mountains like Monte San Salvatore and the Monte Bre. When ascending to the aforementioned mountain, you will pass the picturesque village called Bre (as pictured below). We usually stay at this budget guesthouse which is a perfect starting point for your Montre Bre hike and offers wonderful views over the Lugano lake! It's well situated if you plan to explore the city of Lugano. It is a 40-minute well-marked and picturesque walk along the lake. Another advice, book your stay for the end of July or beginning of August to enjoy Lugano's open festivals with free concerts!
Locarno is a beautiful Italian-speaking city situated on the majestic Lake Maggiore. It amazes with all the small cafes and restaurants at the lakefront and represents a nice chill-out place! For all movie-junkies each year in August the Locarno International Film Festival takes place! For a cold refresh on a hot summer day, make sure to plunge into the beautiful and green-coloured Verzasca river which is just 30 minutes drive from Locarno - for us, this is definitely one of the most stunning rivers in Switzerland!
Ascona is a cute little-town, known for its Mediterranean architecture. Also Ascona is rich in the cafes and restaurants along the lake and what we liked there as well were all the little cute shops in the narrow cobbled streets! Go for it!
Bellinzona is the capital city of Ticino. It owns 3 medieval castles but the most scenic one is the Castelgrande castle. Make sure to stop here while on your way to the South of Ticino!
To conclude, we hope we could give you a good insight of Switzerland vacation spots! But we need to warn you: Once you will set foot in this country and get to know a bit of its nature scenery with the medieval towns, there will be a huge chance that you might want to come back asap! So which vacation spot would you choose?
